drawing of farm and silo An increasing number of our customers are realizing the benefits of eating and buying locally. Safeway is committed to purchasing locally grown produce when possible which, in turn, benefits our customers, their regional economies and our environment. Safeway's locally grown produce is sourced from nearby supply sources and growers, ensuring a product that can be up to hundreds of miles fresher by the time it arrives at the dinner table.

With over 1,000 local vendor partners throughout the United States and Canada, roughly 30% of the produce sold by Safeway annually is local. We require our local vendors to meet the company's strict safety and quality standards for planting, growing, harvesting, handling and transporting. Before produce reaches the store, Safeway conducts multiple inspections for quality, flavor and appearance—giving Safeway customers the best value for their food dollar.

In addition to the quality benefits, buying locally grown fruits and vegetables reduces greenhouse gas emissions by limiting transportation miles. Sourcing locally ensures the vitality of regional farms, which translates into economic opportunities and development for a broad range of related businesses in the communities Safeway serves.
