Breast Cancer
In 2009, Safeway raised more than $18 million for breast cancer research, bringing the total to more than $78 million over the last eight years.
The Safeway Foundation collaborates with leading cancer centers across the country to identify cutting-edge research programs and trials. Some of these cancer centers are working jointly on projects to expand the pool of volunteers for clinical trials and bring together the best and brightest minds in scientific research.
One such project is the national I-SPY program, a collaboration between the National Cancer Institute and 14 cancer centers across the country, designed to accelerate the development of more personalized clinical breast cancer trials for women.
The main objective of the study is to identify indicators of response to neoadjuvant therapy – in this case, change in tumor volume as measured by the MRI and to determine how well this measure correlates to long-term recurrence and survival.

We also helped fund this innovative large-scale project whose mission is to integrate clinical care and research to drive the prevention, screening, treatment and management of breast cancer. Through this cutting-edge project, progress is being made in accelerating research discovery and the time it takes to implement innovations in clinical practice.

Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer strikes 1 in 6 men each year, killing more than 28,000 annually. The Safeway campaign brings awareness to the importance of early detection. In 2009, Safeway raised more than $12 million for this important cause.

TEMT Program Overview
The Safeway Foundation supports the Prostate Cancer Foundation's efforts to raise awareness and fund research for better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. One of the unique, Safeway-funded, research programs that show promise is Temperature Enhanced Metastatic Therapy (TEMT).

The TEMT research program is a novel approach to treating cancer based on the observation that cancer cells may be more sensitive to changes in temperature than normal cells. The theory is that delivering heat directly to hidden cancer cells will make them more sensitive to treatment and decrease the overall toxic effects of chemotherapy on the patient.
