Since 2001, Safeway has maintained a professional association with a number of well-recognized experts in animal welfare. The company's Animal Welfare Council is composed of both Safeway experts and a number of animal welfare scientists from top universities, including Colorado State University and the University of California, Davis. The Council’s broad mandate is to provide guidance and counsel to the company on matters relating to the humane treatment of animals in the food production system.
